Nancy Louise Schuman, née Deming, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on May 28, 2026. Born on December 26, 1943, Nancy lived a life marked by deep love, faith, and selfless dedication to others. Her vibrant spirit and caring heart left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
A loving, carefree, and sensitive woman, Nancy was a devoted believer who found joy and strength in her faith. She cherished Bible study, an expression of her unwavering love for Jesus, which guided her compassionate outlook on life. Nancy’s radiant spirit shone through in everything she did, from her loving family relationships to her wide-reaching community service.
Nancy's journey began in Royal Oak, Michigan, where she graduated from Dondero High School in the class of 1962. Her commitment to service blossomed through her work delivering meals for Meals on Wheels and her dedication to the Royal Oak Library. Starting by loaning books to shut-ins, Nancy eventually joined the library’s staff, where she worked dutifully until her retirement in 2006. Her love for reading was lifelong, enriching her days and connecting her to countless stories and souls.
A woman of many talents and interests, Nancy found great joy in gardening, plaster craft, painting, making jewelry, and playing cards. Singing was her absolute favorite pastime, a passion she nurtured for over fifty years as a cherished member of the choir at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church. Her voice was a gift to her congregation and a beacon of spiritual and musical beauty. Additionally, she delighted in listening to books on CD and piecing together intricate jigsaw puzzles, embracing life's small pleasures with grace.
Among Nancy's proudest accomplishments was her spiritual journey, highlighted when she accepted Jesus during a significant trip to Lake Junaluska, North Carolina for the Detroit Emmaus Board. There, she helped research and support the start of a Chrysalis group in Detroit, where she served on the board for three years, further demonstrating her commitment to nurturing faith-based community connections.
Memories of Nancy’s joyful spirit will forever be treasured by those who shared special moments with her. For over twenty-five years, she was a beloved regular at the Labor Day weekend Barbershop Music Concerts at Harrisville, Michigan, delighting in the music and community. She also enjoyed attending craft shows, where her creative eye and warm laughter brightened the atmosphere.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Bill Schuman; her sister, Joan Graney; her brother-in-law, David Northup; her sister-in-law, Micky Roby; and numerous nieces and nephews who will continue to carry her love forward. Though her parents—Roy and Dorothy Deming—and siblings—Frank, Tom, and Art Deming and Jackie Northup—have gone before her, their memories remain forever intertwined with hers.
A short Visitation will be held for Nancy at Troy Christian Chapel, located at 400 E. Long Lake, Troy MI 48085 on June 13, 2026, at 10:00 AM. A Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 AM at the same location.
The loss of Nancy Louise Schuman leaves an immense void in the hearts of her family, friends, and community. Yet, her legacy of kindness, faith, and joyous song endures, a testament to a life well-lived and a soul deeply cherished. Her loving and self-sacrificing nature will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, embraced by the love she always so freely gave.
