Joseph Leonard Burgess

Joseph Leonard Burgess, affectionately known as Joey, was born on July 2, 2007, in Detroit, Michigan, and passed away on July 22, 2026, in Eastpointe, Michigan. Though his time with us was far too short, Joey illuminated the lives of all who knew him with a spirit that was both gentle and vibrant.

Joey was a young man whose selflessness, kindness, and generosity formed the heart of his character. Those closest to him will remember his even temper, quiet strength, and a happiness that seemed to bubble up from within. Hard-working and honest in all that he did, Joey’s care and empathy stretched out to everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

From an early age, Joey showed a deep curiosity for technology and creativity. He had a unique knack for rebuilding and fixing computers, always eager to help others, often without being compensated. Most recently, Joey found immense joy and success in creating and selling his own video games—turning his passion into real accomplishment at such a young age. Beginning work at 15, Joey displayed rare dedication, a trait that only grew stronger with each new milestone. At 18, he proudly secured his own apartment, taking his first steps into independence with courage and determination.

Family meant everything to Joey, and his happiest moments were often those spent surrounded by his loved ones. He reveled in playing PC games. He often would work out with his friend Matthew. Joey’s love for movie nights with Matt, especially when it came to the latest Marvel releases, brought camaraderie to the fore again and again.

Among his dearest companions was his beloved cat, Rimo. The day Rimo came into Joey’s life marked a turning point, helping him to open up, become more social, and blossom with newfound responsibility. Rimo became not just a pet, but a true friend, and to Joey, being “dad” to Rimo was one of his greatest achievements.

Joey cherished spending time with his grandmother, Carol Sue Coombs, caring for her with great tenderness and sharing many laughs. Even when accompanying her to Bingo—despite it not being his favorite pastime—his sense of duty and love never wavered.

Today, Joey is remembered with love by his devoted mom, Sabrina; his brothers, Tyler, Andrew, Lonnie, and Jaxx; his twin sister Lillie; his uncles, Leonard and Geronimo; his aunt Kimberly (Patrick); his nephews, Lincoln and Camden; his niece Kinsley; his cousins, Jessy (Audrey) and Carolyn (Mike); his step-dad, Thomas Sharp; and the scores of other great-aunts, uncles, and cousins in the family. He now joins his beloved grandma, Carol Sue Coombs, in rest.

Those who knew Joey will carry his memory forward—his quiet perseverance, his humor, and the love he so freely gave. His legacy lives on in the joy he brought to his family, the creativity he shared, and the compassion he showed in every aspect of his life.

A Memorial Gathering celebrating Joey’s life will take place on August 3, 2026, at 4:00 PM, at one of the family's homes, 4439 Burssens Drive, Warren, MI 48092. All who loved Joey are welcome to come together, share memories, and honor a remarkable young man whose presence will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
