Listen to Obituary

Dennis M. Kunath, a devoted family man, hardworking professional, and proud Vietnam veteran, passed away peacefully at his home in Warren, Michigan, on May 17, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of his beloved wife of 56 years.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Dennis dedicated much of his life to providing for the family he cherished deeply. Throughout his career, he demonstrated an unwavering work ethic, whether serving as a foreman at Pepsi and Coca Cola, applying his skills as a machinist at Micro Mirror, or later independently running his business as a truck driver. His philosophy was simple yet profound: show up, work hard, and get the job done. This steadfast approach resonated through every facet of his life and earned him the respect of those who knew him.

Dennis’s educational pursuits led him to earn two associate degrees from Macomb Community College—in General Studies and General Business—reflecting his dedication to personal growth and learning. His pride extended beyond his professional accomplishments to the family and relationships he nurtured over the years.

Dennis served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969 as a scout dog handler with his faithful canine companions, Herk and Lux. The experiences of his military service remained with him throughout his life, carrying both pride and burden with quiet dignity.

Dennis was known for his straightforward nature, quiet observations, and thoughtful reflections. He often contemplated matters for days or even months before sharing insights that had clearly matured in his mind over time. Loyal and protective, deeply family-oriented, he had a unique gift for making people feel safe, welcomed, and at ease. His presence, whether at a card game, watching a favorite sports team with a Miller Lite in hand, or quietly listening from across the room, invariably brought comfort and reassurance to those around him.

His love for life was reflected in numerous hobbies and interests. Dennis delighted in participating in card and board games such as Euchre and Aggravation, enjoyed bowling, horseshoes, golfing, darts, pool, cornhole, and fishing, and treasured time spent on the lake or exploring trips up north. In his younger days, he embraced hunting and water skiing, while in later years, traveling with Raelyn to Arizona and Las Vegas for casino visits and video poker. A devoted fan of football, baseball, hockey, and basketball, Dennis could be found cheering on his hometown teams with enthusiasm and a playful competitive spirit.

Dennis leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, stories, inside jokes, and family traditions that have become treasured parts of the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. His lifelong habit of bestowing nicknames upon loved ones—from Cindy Lou and JJ Jet to McDude, McVic, McV and Karen Critter—added warmth, humor, and a special closeness within the family. His joyful exclamations, tales of submarine races along Lake Michigan, and musical gifts such as singing “Nessa Nessa Bo Bessa” for his granddaughter Vanessa will live on in the hearts of many.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Raelyn Kunath (VanBeckum); daughter Julie (Lance) Lewis; son Dennis Kunath; brothers Jack Kunath, Bob (Pat) Kunath, David (Sheree) Kunath, and Larry Kunath; sisters Lorrie Tithof (Ken) and Susan Ehlers (Gene); granddaughters Victoria Villarreal, Veronica Zesiger (Cassidy), and Vanessa Lewis; great-grandchildren Breah, Jason, Kara, Rayne, Sora, and Larry; alongside many fellow veterans, extended family members, and lifelong friends.

Dennis also lovingly remembered those who preceded him in death: his parents John A. and Betty M. Kunath; brother Bill Kunath (Anita); brothers-in-law Paul Cummins and Ken Tithof; nieces Lorrie (Arendt), Cindy (Grube) aka Cindy Lou, Maryann Tithof; and his beloved infant daughter, Baby Girl Kunath, whose loss he and Raelyn carried with enduring love.

Some of Dennis’s proudest accomplishments were the life he built with Raelyn and the family they raised together. His resilience in overcoming the trials of war and dedicating himself to family, friendships, and stories of laughter and love defined the legacy he leaves behind. True to his character, he was a steadfast protector, a loyal friend, and someone others could always count on throughout every stage of life.

Friends and family are invited to honor Dennis’s life at a visitation on May 21, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wysocki & Wilk Funeral Home, located at 29440 Ryan Rd, Warren, Michigan. A Funeral Service is planned for the same day at 7:00 p.m. Interment will take place the next morning, May 22, at 10:00 a.m., at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Road, Holly, Michigan.

Dennis M. Kunath’s presence brought comfort and joy to all who knew him. Though his absence leaves an irreplaceable void, the lessons, laughter, and love he shared will continue to inspire and sustain his family and friends for generations to come.
